100-day art festival seeking proposals

Setouchi International Art Festival 2010 is inviting proposals from both Japanese and international artists for a 100-day exhibition to take place from July next year. The exhibition will be spread over seven islands located in Japan's Seto Inland Sea and artists are invited to incorporate the existing environment, with submission categories including works to be placed in "private or vacant houses," pieces to be installed in alleys on Ogijima island and artworks inspired by the natural landscape or terraced rice paddies of Shodoshima island. The application fee is a mere 1000 yen (about 10 bucks US) and up to three submissions by individual artists or groups will be accepted.

Besides the opportunity to exhibit alongside the likes of Chiharu Shiota and Christian Boltanski, successful applicants will receive a production fee of between 500,000 yen to 2,500,000 yen to cover costs (around US$5,000 to 26,000).

The deadline for submission is August 31. More details, including the application form, guidelines and information about the various islands can be found here.
